Physical activity, prevention and treatment of chronic diseases – A collective expert review by Inserm
Inserm was tasked by the French Ministry of Sports with producing a collective expert review in order to take stock of scientific knowledge and to analyze, within the scope of chronic diseases, the impact of physical activity and its place in the care pathway. This review is based on a critical analysis of the international scientific literature made by a multidisciplinary group of thirteen researchers with expertise in various fields relating to chronic diseases, from sports medicine to psychosociology.

How allergens trigger asthma attacks
A veritable sensor: a team of Inserm and CNRS researchers at the Institute of Pharmacology and Structural Biology (IPBS, CNRS/Paul Sabatier University – Toulouse III) has identified a protein that is able to detect various allergens in the respiratory tract, which are responsible for asthma attacks. This study, co-led by Corinne Cayrol and Jean-Philippe Girard, was published in Nature Immunology on March 19, 2018. It offers hope for breakthroughs in the treatment of allergic illnesses.

An international study identifies new loci associated with asthma wich are enriched in epigenetic marks
An international study led by scientists from Inserm and Paris Diderot University (France), the University of Chicago (USA), the National Heart and Lung Institute (UK) and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (USA) together with researchers of the Trans-National Asthma Genetics Consortium (TAGC) has discovered five new regions of the genome that increase the risk of asthma. This study is published online in Nature Genetics on 22 December 2017.

A new therapeutic target in allergic asthma
Vincent Sauzeau, Inserm researcher and his team located at the Nantes Thorax Institute[1] (Inserm, CNRS, University of Nantes, Nantes University Hospital) have recently discovered the major role played by the Rac1 protein in the development of bronchial hyperresponsiveness associated with allergic asthma. Researchers will use this new therapeutic target to reduce bronchoconstriction and pulmonary inflammation in patients. This article has been published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

10 Principles for Fighting Climate Change
Since the COP 22, health has been a central topic of discussion. It is within this context, and on the day before the One planet Summit to be held tomorrow in Paris, that 10 principles for protecting respiratory health from climate change were proposed by an ad hoc workgroup from the Environment and Health Committee of the European Respiratory Society. Men/Women: not all equal in the face of allergic asthma
Researchers led by Jean-Charles Guéry of the Centre for Pathophysiology Toulouse Purpan (Inserm/Université Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier/ CNRS) are providing new insights into the possible link between male hormones and differences in gender in susceptibility to allergic asthma. This study demonstrates that hormones such as testosterone act on the immune system. The results are to be published in the scientific review The Journal of Experimental Medicine on 1 May 2017.
